Opened in 2015, the Isle of Harris Distillery in Tarbert is the island's first legal distillery. The gin — Harris Gin — has become well known outside Scotland, using local botanicals that include sugar kelp harvested from the surrounding sea. The whisky is still maturing; limited releases have sold out quickly. The building itself is contemporary and well-designed, sitting comfortably on the Tarbert waterfront without trying to look old.
Guided tours of the distillery are available daily, taking in the stills and ending with a tasting. Tarbert itself is the main community on Harris and the ferry terminal for services from Uig on Skye, so the distillery is easy to combine with an arrival or departure. The shop stocks the full range; the gin is worth bringing home.
