Hushinish

White-sand beach at the end of a 12-mile single-track road on the Atlantic edge of North Harris

Hushinish (Hùisinis) is a scatter of four houses above a white sand beach at the very end of the road — a 12-mile single-track B road west from the A859 near Tarbert, past the grand Victorian Amhuinnsuidhe Castle. The beach faces the Atlantic, with the hills of North Harris behind and the uninhabited island of Scarp across a narrow sound.

It's a wonderful place to walk, picnic and sit out the wind. An infrequent bus runs out from Tarbert, but most people drive; take it slowly, the road is narrow and twisting.

A story
In July 1934 the German inventor Gerhard Zucker tried to deliver the post between Scarp and Harris by rocket. Both attempts failed — the first rocket exploded — and singed envelopes from the experiment survive.
