Getting There

The main access is from Mzuzu via Rumphi, on a road that is tarmacked as far as Rumphi and dirt for the steep final 50 kilometres up to the Thazima Gate. The climb is severe and the road deteriorates badly in the rains (November to April); 4WD with low range is essential in any season, and recovery vehicles are scarce.

Sporadic charter flights run from Lilongwe to the airstrip near Chelinda, mostly arranged through the lodges. There is no public transport into the park; you need your own vehicle or a tour. Bring enough fuel for the entire visit — the pump at Chelinda is unreliable and there is no other source within several hours of driving.
