The best seasons are April to June and September to October. Spring brings new green growth on the red cliff faces and water levels are high in the lake after winter rains. Autumn has clear skies and comfortable temperatures. Summer is hot and humid, but the lake scenery is most dramatic after summer rains when the water is fullest. Winter is cool and quiet, with almost no domestic tourists — good for photography but some boat services may be reduced. The Danxia landscape looks particularly vivid after rain, when the sandstone is saturated and the colour deepens.
