Gwongeumseong Fortress

Gwongeumseong is a mountain fortress on a ridge above the Oesorak valley, reached most easily via the Seoraksan cable car from the Seorakdong park entrance. The cable car delivers passengers to a station near 700 metres elevation, from where a short walk brings you to the fortress ruins — sections of the Goryeo-era stone walls still standing on the rocky ridge, with panoramic views over the park.

The fortress site itself is modest, but the elevated position and the views make it the best quick overview of Seoraksan's landscape. The cable car is popular in autumn when the foliage colours peak, and queues can be long; arrive early or book online. From the fortress, fit hikers can continue on marked trails deeper into the park rather than returning by cable car. The area around the cable car station has good valley views and is worth lingering even if you don't ascend to the fortress.

A story
Gwongeumseong was built by two local generals — Gwon and Geum — during the Goryeo Dynasty (918–1392) as a refuge against Mongol invasions. The fortress walls were built without mortar, using only the natural granite of the ridge, and sections of wall have survived for over 700 years despite the harsh mountain winters. The site was largely forgotten until the national park was established in 1970.
