Towangseong Waterfall

Towangseong Waterfall is one of the highest waterfalls in South Korea, dropping 320 metres down a granite face in three tiers in the upper Cheonbuldong valley. The waterfall itself is best viewed from a dedicated observation deck on the opposite side of the valley — the viewing platform is reached by a short separate trail that branches off the main valley path. From the deck, you can see the full cascade in one frame, which is extraordinary in spring snowmelt or after summer rain.

The approach from Seorakdong park entrance takes about 90 minutes along the valley trail via Yukdam and Biryong Falls. The final section of trail near the waterfall base can be wet and slippery from spray; appropriate footwear is worth wearing. The falls are at their most dramatic in June and July after heavy summer rains, and again in spring when snowmelt from the upper peaks adds to the volume. In winter, they sometimes freeze completely.

A story
Towangseong means "waterfall of the king who fled here" — referring to the legend of a Silla Dynasty king who took refuge in these mountains. At 320 metres, the waterfall is one of Korea's tallest, though the full drop is visible only from specific viewpoints on the opposite valley wall. A separate observation deck trail was built specifically so visitors could see the complete cascade in one view.
