Baiyang Waterfall Trail

The Baiyang Waterfall Trail is a moderately easy walk of about 2 kilometres each way into the upper gorge, leading through two tunnels (one long, one short) to a viewing area below the Baiyang Waterfall — a wide curtain of water dropping about 40 metres into a pool. Beyond the main waterfall, an extension through a third tunnel leads to the Water Curtain Cave, where water seeps and pours through the entire ceiling of the tunnel — an extraordinary and completely soaking experience.

The trail is accessible in most weather and remains cool even in Taiwan's summer heat, since most of the route is inside tunnels or alongside the river. Torches (flashlights) are useful in the darker sections; the park rents them at the trailhead. The Baiyang area is in the middle gorge, accessible from Tianxiang, which has basic amenities. The walk takes about 1.5-2 hours return; the Water Curtain Cave extension adds 30 minutes and should not be skipped.

A story
The Baiyang Trail was built through an abandoned water diversion tunnel originally constructed to supply a hydroelectric facility. When the plant was decommissioned, the park authority opened the tunnel as a walking route, adding a detour to the waterfall. The tunnel that visitors walk through behind the Baiyang waterfall — where water pours through the ceiling from above — was an accident of the tunnel's angle cutting through a natural water channel.
