Baravet

Baravet is a cluster of villages on the southwest coast of Pentecost, between Panngi and the Catholic mission of Melsisi. The name comes from the Ske language — bwara vet, "big stone" — and refers to a large basalt outcrop near the main settlement. It is one of the more accessible kastom-leaning communities on the island, with several villages running their own land-dive towers during the season as alternatives to the better-known Bunlap and Panngi events.

The walk between the villages of Baravet is one of the nicer day walks on Pentecost — bush-edged tracks, gardens, glimpses of the sea, and houses where people will stop work to chat. Stay at one of the village bungalows if you have the time; it is a quieter alternative to staying in Panngi for the land-dive weekends.
