Xalapa is a good base for day trips into the surrounding region. The pre-Columbian ruins at El Tajín, a Totonac ceremonial centre with its remarkable Pyramid of the Niches, are about three hours away by bus via Papantla — a full day trip. White-water rafting on the Río Pescados at Jalcomulco, about 45 minutes away, is the best commercial whitewater in Mexico and runs all year; book with an outfitter in the village rather than through an agency in the city. The coast at Veracruz is about 90 minutes away and makes an easy day trip if you want sea and sand after the highland coolness.
Coffee farm visits (fincas) in the hills around Coatepec and Xico — towns just outside Xalapa — are worth a morning. Both towns are picturesque, and Xico is famous for its mole and its waterfall, Cascada de Texolo.
