Ping Tom Memorial Park

Riverfront park at the north edge of Chinatown, designed with Chinese landscape elements by Peter Landon in 1999

A riverfront park at the north edge of Chinatown, designed with Chinese landscape elements — a pavilion, a boathouse in a traditional style, formal plantings — and offering some of the best access to the Chicago River south of the Loop. The park is used primarily by Chinatown residents for tai chi, walking, and summer picnics.

The water taxi that runs between Chinatown and the Loop stops at the Ping Tom boathouse in summer, providing an unusual river-level approach to the neighbourhood. The park is quiet during the week and crowded on summer weekends. The combination of river access, Chinese architectural detailing, and skyline views makes it one of the more visually distinctive small parks in the city.
