Magpupungko Rock Pools

Magpupungko is one of Siargao's most magical spots, accessible only at low tide when the sea retreats to reveal a series of crystal-clear natural pools carved into the volcanic rock formations of the reef. The largest pool is deep enough to swim in and clear enough to see the bottom. Smaller pools dot the surrounding rocky platform, perfect for wading and exploration.

The setting is dramatic — jagged black rock formations rise from the reef, with open sea crashing on the outer edge and the jungle-fringed coast behind. A jump from the rocks into the main pool is a rite of passage for visitors, though you should check the depth and wait for adequate tide. Magpupungko is about 25 km north of General Luna, a 40-minute motorbike ride. Check the tide tables before going — you want to arrive as the tide is going out and have several hours at the pools.

A story
The name Magpupungko comes from a local word meaning "to balance" or "to stand," a reference to the spectacular rock formations that jut from the reef. At high tide, the pools completely disappear — you'd have no idea they were there. Locals have used them as natural swimming holes for generations, but they only became known to visitors in the late 2000s.
