The Pyramid of the Moon stands at the northern end of the Avenue of the Dead, smaller than the Pyramid of the Sun (only forty-three metres) but visually as dramatic — it is set against the bulk of the sacred peak of Cerro Gordo behind, and the angle of its facade exactly mirrors that of the mountain. The Plaza of the Moon in front of it, with twelve smaller platforms around it, was where great public ceremonies took place.
You can climb to the first terrace (about ten metres up) when open, which is the best place in the whole site for the classic view straight down the Avenue of the Dead. The upper stages are closed. Save the Pyramid of the Moon for late afternoon if you can — the light on the plaza and the avenue is striking after about four.
