An 1888 office building by Burnham and Root that contains Frank Lloyd Wright's famous 1905 renovation of its interior light court — one of the most visited architectural interiors in the Loop. The exterior is Romanesque Revival masonry; the interior atrium was rebuilt by Wright in white marble, gold leaf, and art glass in a design that bridges Victorian and modernist sensibilities.
The building remains occupied as office space; visitors can enter the lobby and atrium during business hours without an appointment. The interior is free to view. The surrounding financial district blocks, including the 1930 Chicago Board of Trade at the foot of LaSalle Street, form the best concentrated sequence of early Loop commercial architecture.
