For three months of the year — November to January, at the start of the rains — the plateau becomes one of the most spectacular wildflower destinations on the continent. The dormant grassland erupts into bloom: gladioli, lilies, dieramas, helichrysums, and an extraordinary range of ground orchids in every colour.
A botanical walk from Chelinda with a knowledgeable guide is the easiest way to see what you would otherwise miss. The flowers are widespread but most are small, and many of the rarities tuck themselves into specific habitats — boggy hollows, rocky outcrops, the burnt patches that follow the dry-season fires. Bring a hand lens.
