Jama Masjid is one of old Mumbai's more atmospheric mosques, built above an older tank in the early 19th century. The courtyard still centres on the stepped water tank, while stone arches rise from it to support the prayer hall above.
The mosque is worth seeking out for the unusual structure as much as for its religious role. It gives a quieter look at the layered Muslim mercantile history of the old city.
