Biryong Falls

Biryong Falls drops about 20 metres over a granite face in the Cheonbuldong valley, one of the most scenic hiking corridors in Seoraksan. The trail from Seorakdong to Biryong takes about 45 minutes along a broad valley path, passing the smaller Yukdam Falls along the way. The waterfalls are linked by the same trail, which continues up to the much larger Towangseong Waterfall above.

The Cheonbuldong valley trail is Seoraksan's most popular walk, and the section to Biryong and Towangseong is well-made and suitable for most walkers. In late autumn the valley walls turn gold and red, and the contrast with the grey granite and white water is exceptional. The full valley walk to Towangseong and back takes about three hours from the park entrance; allow time to pause at each waterfall rather than treating it as a transit.

A story
Biryong means "flying dragon" in Korean — the name comes from the way the waterfall's mist and spray form shifting shapes in the air, which local tradition associated with a dragon rising from the pool. The spray is particularly dramatic in summer after heavy rain, when the falls run at full volume and the mist can be felt far down the valley trail.
