Ulsanbawi is the most dramatic rock formation in Seoraksan — six granite spires rising steeply above the surrounding ridgeline, visible from much of the park. The hike from Sinheungsa temple to the summit takes about two hours each way, beginning gently through a valley before the gradient steepens and the trail gains elevation through a series of granite staircases and iron ladders bolted into the rock face. The final ascent requires some scrambling, but the route is well-equipped and most fit walkers can manage it.
From the flat summit ridge between the spires, the views are exceptional in every direction — the Sea of Japan (East Sea) visible to the east, the lower ridges of the park stretching west, and Sokcho city below. The peak is popular and the trail can be crowded on weekends; an early start is strongly recommended. The trail to Ulsanbawi passes Heundeulbawi — a 15-tonne boulder that rocks visibly when pushed but never falls, drawing visitors who want to test it.
