Glasgow's East End — the area around Glasgow Green, Duke Street, and the Barras market — is the oldest and most working-class part of the city. It is also the fastest-changing, with the Merchant City neighbourhood on its western edge now firmly gentrified and the streets around the market gradually filling with independent businesses. The East End contains the Cathedral and Necropolis, the People's Palace, and the Barras, and is where the real texture of historical Glasgow survives most clearly. It rewards the visitor who ventures beyond the West End.
