Willow Tea Rooms

Address 217 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow

The Willow Tea Rooms on Sauchiehall Street are Mackintosh's most accessible surviving interior, recently restored to their 1903 appearance after years as a jeweller's shop. Commissioned by Kate Cranston — a pioneering tea room entrepreneur who gave Mackintosh some of his most important early commissions — the Willow was designed down to the last teaspoon, with every element of the room conceived as a unified decorative scheme.

The Room de Luxe on the first floor, with its silver-painted furniture, mirrored friezes, and jewel-coloured leaded glass, is the most complete surviving example of the Mackintosh style in regular use. Tea is served here — reasonably priced, and you can sit in rooms that looked like this in 1903. The restoration was completed in 2018 and was extremely thorough. One of the most enjoyable Mackintosh experiences in Glasgow.
