Holmwood House

Alexander Greek Thomson villa with richly restored interiors south of Glasgow

Holmwood House is one of Glasgow's best small architecture visits, designed by Alexander "Greek" Thomson in the 1850s for paper magnate James Couper. From outside it looks calm and classical; inside, the restored colour schemes, stencilling, and carefully controlled proportions show why Thomson matters well beyond local architectural history.

It is south of the centre, so it takes a little intention to reach, but that helps keep it quieter than Glasgow's headline museums. Go if you are interested in design, domestic architecture, or the city's 19th-century confidence. Holmwood is not large, but it is precise, original, and very Glaswegian in its seriousness.
