Hamilton Mausoleum

Hamilton Mausoleum is a huge, severe monument to the Dukes of Hamilton, built on a scale that feels almost absurd beside the surrounding parkland. Its great dome was once famous for a long echo, and the whole building says a lot about aristocratic ambition in 19th-century Scotland.

It is outside central Glasgow, so treat it as a short excursion rather than a city-centre sight. The exterior alone is striking, but check current access if you want to see inside.
