Provand's Lordship

Glasgow's oldest surviving house, a 1471 medieval building beside the cathedral precinct

Provand's Lordship is the oldest surviving house in Glasgow, built in 1471 and tucked into the city's medieval core near Glasgow Cathedral and the St Mungo Museum. It is small, dark, and uneven in exactly the right way: a rare domestic building from a city that later remade itself in Georgian, Victorian, and industrial stone.

Inside, the rooms hold period furniture, portraits, and displays on the building and its neighbourhood, but the house itself is the main exhibit. Step behind it into St Nicholas Garden for a quieter pause among herbs, clipped greenery, and the carved Tontine Heads. It makes an easy and worthwhile add-on to the cathedral precinct rather than a separate cross-town errand.
