The Tenement House is a rare survival of everyday Glasgow rather than grand Glasgow. The National Trust for Scotland keeps this Garnethill flat much as shorthand typist Agnes Toward left it, with box beds, coal fires, kitchen ranges, china, bills, and household objects still doing the quiet work of explaining how middle-class city life functioned.
It is a strong counterpoint to Mackintosh, the cathedral, and the big museums because nothing here is trying to impress you. The rooms are small, orderly, and full of lived detail, which makes the visit surprisingly memorable. Go when you want a human-scale piece of Glasgow's social history.
