Wicker Park is defined by the six-corners intersection where Milwaukee, North, and Damen avenues meet — one of the most energetic street-level environments in Chicago. The neighbourhood built its reputation through the 1990s as the city's alternative arts and music hub, a character it has mostly held despite significant gentrification since.
Reckless Records on Milwaukee Avenue is one of the last great independent record stores in the Midwest, carrying new and used vinyl across every genre. A few blocks away, Myopic Books on Milwaukee stocks an enormous collection of used books floor to ceiling. Quimby's Bookstore on North Avenue specialises in small press, zines, comics, and counterculture — it has operated continuously since 1991.
The Empty Bottle on Western Avenue is the neighbourhood's anchor music venue, known for booking noise, experimental, jazz, and indie acts in an unpretentious bar setting. The now-closed Double Door on Milwaukee was the larger venue for touring acts through the 1990s and 2000s; the building still stands at the six-corners. The Flat Iron Arts Building on Milwaukee houses artist studios and remains a working creative hub.
The surrounding blocks are lined with Queen Anne and Italianate houses from the 1880s and 1890s, built when the neighbourhood was home to prosperous German and Scandinavian merchant families. The Damen Blue Line stop puts you at the centre of everything; the Division stop on the Red Line is a short walk east. The adjacent Bucktown neighbourhood to the north shares a similar character with slightly more polish.
