Motor Row (S Michigan Avenue)

South Michigan Avenue corridor lined with 1910s–1920s auto showrooms, now a National Register Historic District

The stretch of South Michigan Avenue from Cermak Road south to about 25th Street was Chicago's automobile dealership district from the 1900s through the 1940s — a sequence of showroom buildings with large plate-glass windows designed to display new cars to passersby. The architecture is some of the best surviving early commercial showroom construction in the United States.

Several of the buildings have been converted to entertainment venues, studios, and event spaces while retaining their facades. The Motor Row District is on the National Register of Historic Places; the Chicago Architecture Center runs occasional tours. The district is not a visitor attraction in the conventional sense but the architecture is worth photographing if you are in the neighbourhood.
