One of the last unreconstructed neighborhood taverns in Wicker Park, the Innertown Pub on West Chicago Avenue has been operating since the 1930s and has resisted the neighbourhood's upscaling with some consistency. The interior is dark, the drinks are cheap, and the jukebox is excellent — blues and soul rather than the indie rock that fills the nearby bars.
The Innertown represents the Wicker Park that preceded the boutique era: working-class, Polish immigrant heritage, no cocktail menu. The contrast with the Damen Avenue commercial strip two blocks east is one of the more interesting neighbourhood juxtapositions on the North Side. It is a functioning bar first and a curiosity for visitors second.
