A natural history museum at the north end of Lincoln Park with a focus on the ecosystems of the Chicago region — prairie, dunes, river, and lake. The most popular exhibit is the Judy Istock Butterfly Haven, a large indoor greenhouse where dozens of butterfly species fly freely among native plants year-round.
The museum is aimed at families but not dumbed down: the exhibit design is thoughtful and the Midwest ecology focus gives it a distinct perspective compared to general natural history museums. Less crowded than the Field Museum and considerably easier for children. Open daily; admission charged.
