House of Glunz (Wine Merchant)

Oldest wine merchant in Chicago, the House of Glunz has operated continuously on Wells Street since 1888

The oldest wine merchant in Chicago, the House of Glunz has been in continuous operation since 1888 and has remained on the same block in Old Town through multiple ownerships. The store has a particular reputation for German and Austrian wines, accumulated over its German-immigrant founding, alongside a serious cellar of vintage Bordeaux and Burgundy.

The building itself is a surviving 19th-century commercial building; the interior has much of its original woodwork and is one of the more atmospheric retail spaces in Old Town. Worth visiting even if you do not intend to buy — the staff are knowledgeable and do not pressure. North Wells Street.
