Wicker Park Neighborhood

Wicker Park neighborhood proper — the triangular park at Damen and Schiller around which the community's identity is centered

Wicker Park proper — the small triangular park at Damen and Schiller that gives the neighbourhood its name — is a modest green square surrounded by some of Chicago's finest late-Victorian domestic architecture. The houses along Hoyne, Schiller, and Pierce from the 1880s and 1890s include examples of Second Empire, Romanesque Revival, and Queen Anne styles built by the Polish and Scandinavian merchant class that made Wicker Park one of Chicago's wealthiest neighbourhoods before 1900.

The park holds a summer Saturday farmers market and is the starting point for guided architecture walks run periodically by the Chicago Architecture Center. The surrounding residential streets — particularly the 1800 and 1900 blocks of Hoyne and Pierce — are worth exploring on foot for the concentration of surviving 19th-century domestic architecture.
