Smith Park at Loomis and Ohio is the main green space in Ukrainian Village, a modest neighbourhood park with a field house, playground, and outdoor basketball courts that serves the residential blocks around it. The park reflects the neighbourhood's working-class character — functional, well-maintained, community-used rather than visitor-facing.
The streets surrounding the park, particularly Augusta and Ohio to the north, have some of the best-preserved workers' cottage and two-flat architecture in the neighbourhood. The scale of the houses reflects the modest prosperity of the Eastern European immigrant community — larger than the most cramped immigrant housing, but without the pretension of the merchant-class houses further east. Walking here gives a direct picture of Chicago's early 20th-century residential fabric.
