Chicago Defender Building

The Chicago Defender Building is a Black Metropolis landmark with a deep connection to African-American publishing history. Built in 1899 as a synagogue, it housed the Chicago Defender newspaper from 1920 to 1960, when the paper was a major national voice and helped shape the Great Migration.

The building is best seen as part of a walk through the surrounding Bronzeville historic district.
