Rockefeller Memorial Chapel

Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, the Gothic Revival centerpiece of the University of Chicago campus, completed 1928

The Gothic Revival chapel at the heart of the University of Chicago campus, built 1928 with funding from John D. Rockefeller, is a substantial neo-Gothic structure designed by Bertram Goodhue in limestone with a 270-foot tower visible throughout the neighbourhood. The interior — carved stone, stained glass, a vaulted nave — is worth seeing for the quality of the craftsmanship and as a record of the aspiration that built the university.

Services run on Sundays and the chapel is open for visitors during daytime hours. The carillon in the tower is played on Sundays and at university events. The surrounding university campus — laid out in a consistent Gothic Revival style from the 1890s onward — is one of the most coherent urban academic environments in the United States. 5850 S Woodlawn.
