The Newberry Library is an independent public research library just west of the Gold Coast, with deep collections in the humanities, American and European history, maps, genealogy, and the age of exploration. It is not part of the Chicago Public Library system, but its exhibitions and many events are open to visitors.
Come when there is a show, lecture, or author event that matches your interests. Even without one, the building makes a worthwhile short stop if you are walking between the Gold Coast, Old Town, and River North.
