A 1921 French baroque movie palace on State Street that is one of the city's most recognisable landmarks — the sign above the marquee, red letters on white, is among the most photographed in Chicago. The theatre now operates as a live music and entertainment venue, hosting everything from concerts and comedy to television tapings.

The interior is extraordinarily lavish: grand lobbies, a marble staircase, original murals, and a 3,600-seat auditorium with every surface decorated. Tours run periodically; otherwise the interior is only accessible during ticketed events. The marquee at night is worth photographing regardless of the programme inside. State Street at Lake.
