Green Mill Cocktail Lounge

Jazz bar on Broadway in Uptown open since 1907, former Capone haunt and current home of the Uptown Poetry Slam

A jazz bar on Broadway in Uptown (the northern end of Lakeview) that has been open since 1907 and is the longest-continuously-operating cocktail lounge in Chicago. The Green Mill has some claim to being the most historically significant jazz venue in the Midwest: Al Capone had a booth in the back room from which he could watch both entrances, and the lounge's tunnel to the street was used during Prohibition.

The jazz programme continues nightly, with the Sunday afternoon jam session drawing local and visiting musicians. The interior — original 1930s décor, leather booths, murals, mirrors — is one of the few surviving examples of its kind in Chicago. Cover charge applies on music nights; well-priced drinks. Broadway at Lawrence; L Red Line to Lawrence.
